Goombas, initially called Little Goombas,[1] are a major species within the Mario franchise. They resemble small brown mushrooms with two feet and no visible arms or legs. Goombas first appear in Super Mario Bros., and they have since become one of the most recurring Mario enemies, along with Koopa Troopas. Goombas are usually the first enemy that Mario and Luigi encounter on their journeys, namely in the Super Mario series. Goombas are one of the weakest enemies, and they can be defeated from a single hit, most notably from a stomp, resulting in the Goomba being flattened. Unlike the Mario franchise, Goombas rarely appear in the Yoshi franchise, in which they debut in the puzzle game Yoshi, and Goombas are uncommon enemies in the Yoshi's Island series.

A number of different Goomba variants have emerged that are usually stronger in some way, and even regular Goombas occasionally drop hints of being much stronger and more competent than their appearances suggest, as in the case of Captain Goomba.

The Goombas, as a collective race, used to be allied with the Mushroom Kingdom. However, most of the Goombas turned traitorous and joined the Koopa Troop, an organization led by Bowser. Since Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Goombas not allied with Bowser or the Koopa Troop have appeared; some Goombas, such as the inhabitants of Goomba Village, live peacefully inside the borders of the Mushroom Kingdom, while others simply hold no allegiance and operate independently in distant locales such as Monstro Town and Rogueport.

Yoshi appearances

Goombas make an appearance as one of the six falling objects in Yoshi. For the only time officially since Super Mario Bros., they are called "Little" Goombas in the instruction booklet,[2] but not in the North American television commercial[3] or on the back cover of the packaging. Goombas use a sprite similar to theirs in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Two Goombas in the level GO! GO! MARIO!!! in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Goombas appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, but only appear in one level: GO! GO! MARIO!!. They display a few habits previously unseen in other 2D Mario games. They aimlessly walk in one direction, but before they jump off a ledge, they become idle for a brief moment while wiggling their eyebrows. If they touch Yoshi, they knock Baby Mario off his back. Stomping on a Goomba flattens it but not defeat it. In this state, Goombas can still walk and damage Yoshi if they touch him, but can also carry Yoshi if he stands on them. After some time, the Goomba "pops" and assumes its standard mushroom shape. Goombas can be defeated with an egg or enemy toss, a Ground Pound attack, or by eating and turning them into eggs.

Yoshi's New Island

Goombas appear in Yoshi's New Island, in which they only appear in the level Spin-Lift Drift. They act similarly as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. However, while in their flattened state, they do not jump off a ledge and cannot damage Yoshi. They also always revert to their standard shape immediately after turning around. They are often encountered in chains of enemies and can be defeated with Koopa Shells to gain a combo and extra lives.
