History of Podoboos.png

Podoboos (also called Fire Podoboos, Lava Bubbles, or Fire Bubbles) are lava balls that appear in the games Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS. They are living fireballs (commonly) with two eyes that jump out of lava. If they are eaten by Yoshi, he can gain the ability to shoot fire at enemies, however Yoshi can only do this once before needing to eat another one. They are also in Yoshi's Island DS , and they have the same power and effect on Yoshi. They also appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii in giant forms and little ones that jump out of the water. Sometimes Podoboos appear as a rotating chain turning around a Cog, these are called Podoboo Cogs.

Games[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Podoboos appear in Super Mario World as enemies commonly found in the Castles. They hop out of the lava and descend back in again. A Podoboo can only be defeated with the effects of the Starman. Several Podoboos are also seen in Larry Koopa's boss fight as an additional hazard to avoid. This game also has a different type of Podoboo that flies and bounces off walls called the Zigzag Podoboo. This is the first game where Podoboos are shown to have eyes.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]

Podoboos first appear in Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island their behavior consist of them jumping out of the lava if Yoshi eats one he will be able to spit out fire like the red watermelon. In this game, Podoboos commonly appear in volcanic levels and Castle levels.

Podoboos return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii once again commonly found in castles or lava caverns. This time, Podoboos can also be defeated with the Ice Flower. As of this game, Podoboos now do a flip before landing back in the lava and they also resemble a round Jellyfish/Octopus rather than just a fireball.

Podoboos reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 acting the same as they did previously. In this game, they can also leap from one lava pool to another and once again lack eyes. Podoboos are invincible in this game and cannot be defeated. They appear in Galaxies such as Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet and the Melty Monster Galaxy. A sub-species of the Podoboo called the Lava Bouncer also appears in this game.

New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]

Podoboos also appear in New Super Mario Bros. U as common enemies in Castles. They once again retain their behavior of hopping out of lakes of lava and retain their appearance from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They can be defeated with either the Ice Flower or the Starman.

Trivia[edit]

  • Podoboos are among one of the few enemies from both Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS to not reappear in Yoshi's New Island. In said game, they are replaced by Lava Drops which behave identically.
